Stillman College trustees name interim president

 19-Dec-2016

The Stillman College board of trustees has appointed as its interim president a senior fellow at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund with a history leading historically black institutions in transitional phases.

The board announced the appointment of Cynthia Warrick as the interim leader on Wednesday. Warrick is a senior fellow for research and evaluation with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in Washington, D.C. She has previously served interim presidencies at South Carolina State University during the 2014-15 academic year and Grambling State University in 2012-13.

Warrick is scheduled to start Jan. 3. She will replace Stillman College President Peter Millet, who is leaving Dec. 31 for the job of executive vice president with Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. Millet had originally planned to remain at Stillman until June 2017 before being hired at Meharry Medical College.

In the announcement, Warrick was praised for her record as an interim leader and problem solver capable of stabilizing distressed environments. The college, which has struggled financially during recent years, has enacted a mix of cost-saving reforms such as reducing its athletic programs and programs to increase its enrollment as it has tried to reverse its fortunes.

Previously, board chairman Dennis Driver said the next president will likely be faced with greatly improving the college's current financial situation as he or she lays out a plan to move Stillman forward.

There is an ongoing search for a permanent replacement for Millet. Warrick is not being considered for the permanent post, according to Cassandra Blackburn, assistant to the president and liaison to Board of Trustees. The search committee is co-chaired by trustees Willie Williams and Melvin Douglass. The search firm Greenwood/Asher and Associates Inc. is helping with the search.
