For more than 150 years, Birmingham-Southern has been Alabama’s most outstanding liberal arts college, providing an exceptional educational experience that allows its students to grow, learn, and explore.  Regardless of the profession our students choose, their success depends on their ability to solve problems, to communicate effectively, to anticipate the consequences of their decisions and those of others, and to adapt to a changing world.  Students who graduate from Birmingham-Southern are equipped to meet the world head-on and to make a profound difference.

A four-year, private college affiliated with the United Methodist Church, BSC has long been a sheltering institution for Phi Beta Kappa.  The college boasts an outstanding faculty devoted to teaching and advising.  The low 13-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio allows students more personal attention and more opportunities for student-teacher collaboration and research.

Birmingham-Southern’s academic program is exemplary among liberal arts colleges, offering more than 50 areas of study, as well as interdisciplinary and individualized majors and dual-degree programs.  BSC’s new Explorations general education curriculum, which emphasizes what students will be able to do as a result of their education, is on the leading edge of where general education curricula are moving for the future.  It instills in our graduates the skills and perspectives that professional schools, graduate schools, and employers are seeking in today’s increasingly complex and inter-connected world.

The college is further distinguished by its Exploration January Term, and Honors, Service-Learning, Leadership Studies, Study Abroad, Entrepreneurship, Research Fellows, and Foreign Languages Across The Curriculum programs.

BSC has one of the most beautiful and student-friendly campuses in the nation.  As a member of the NCAA Division III, the college offers 22 varsity sports for men and women.  The college also has 13 national fraternity and sorority groups and many other activities that make for a well-rounded experience.

Each year, more than 50 percent of the college’s graduates go on to graduate school at some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities.  BSC annually is No. 1 in Alabama and among the nation’s best in graduates admitted to medical, dental, and health care programs.  The college also ranks high nationally for graduates accepted to law school, in addition to a distinguished record of job placement.
